    Abstract: Solar photovoltaic technologies are urgently required that unite high efficiency with low cost. As the crystalline silicon platform continues to advance in efficiency and cost-reduction, new solutions are increasingly required to augment, rather than compromise, overall power conversion efficiency. I will discuss recent years' advances in solar materials based on quantum dots, and also based on organometal halide perovskites, and how these can combine with one another and with legacy technologies to produce compelling solar solutions. I will include a discussion of the synthesis, processing, electronic properties, and device physics of these emerging photovoltaic technologies.
