Abstract: Functional materials play a central role in areas such as Healthcare, Sustainability, and Technology, and journals serving the community of chemists, physicists, life scientists, and engineers active in these areas are among some of the highest impact publications in science. Peter Gregory, Editor in Chief of the journal Advanced Materials, will trace the some of the developments in the world of journals and publishing, and the trends in hot topics, funding priorities, geographical contributions to top science, and some publishing themes such as open access. He will provide some food for thought on both how these might develop in the future and how to maximize the chances of being published in top journals.
