Biography

Since 2008, Prof. Dr. Rutger Schlatmann is director of PVcomB, the Institute for technology transfer in Thin-Film and Nanotechnology for Photovoltaics at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, where he is also the speaker of the Renewable Energy Division. He is a full professor (W3) at the Hochschule fuer Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin (since 2012). His current research focuses on thin film and nanotechnology for Si-based and compound semiconductor solar energy, from single cells to full outdoor systems. He is also working on the generation of integrated PV and electrolysis systems to produce ´solar fuels´.

He obtained his PhD at the FOM Institute Amolf in Amsterdam. From 1999 until 2008 he was as R&D manager at Helianthos BV (AkzoNobel/Shell Solar/Nuon), a company developing flexible thin film Si solar modules. Currently he is also a member of the Steering Committee of the European Technology&Innovation Platform PV, vice President of the Berlin Brandenburg Energy Network.

Stretching the efficiency limit of mass-producible solar cell and solar fuel devices by multi-junction based absorber structures
11:20 AM

With the advent of the exciting new material class of inorganic/organic perovskite absorbers, a realistic option has emerged for multi-junction solar cells combining high efficiency with industrial manufacturability. In order to enable future solar-cell efficiencies to exceed the theoretical efficiency limit for single junction devices, we have realigned our research activities over the past years to focus on these absorber material class with a view to applications in multi-junction devices. In collaboration with international partners we have demonstrated the feasibility and pushed the performance of such structures.
