Biography

Essam is a part of the team responsible for aligning the work of REPDO toward the Kingdom’s 2020 National Transformation Program and the Saudi Vision 2030, continually assessing the performance level and quality of REPDO’s ongoing work. REPDO is responsible for achieving targets of the National Renewable Energy Program, developing Saudi’s renewable energy industry, de-risking potential projects and competitively tendering these projects to the local and international market. The VRO office plays a key role throughout the REPDO project pipeline, from land acquisition to technical development, until the project is tendered.  
Before joining REPDO, Mr Al Shehri worked as a project engineer and site engineer for multiple projects for the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC). Essam’s work included initiating bid documents, selecting qualified bidders, evaluating proposals and providing recommendations for all contracts necessary to complete projects. Mr Al Shehri was directly responsible for coordinating SEC’s external project partners including Saudi Aramco, the Royal Commission, Hyundai Heavy Industries and 20 additional suppliers. As a project manager, Mr Al Shehri oversaw project engineers, ensuring all stages of the project were completed on time and to the highest standards of quality and safety. As a result of Essam’s high caliber performance, he was elected by an executive committee of representatives from the Royal Court, Senior Vice Presidents and company executives to become a charter member of the Executive Youth Council. This Council was the first of its kind to gain executive authority within a semi-government company, reporting directly to the CEO on case study analysis and innovative solutions. 
Prior to this, Essam Al Shehri received a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals. He gained his first experience as a trainee in ABB working as a field service engineer. He then advanced in his career to become an electrical engineer for Ash Sharaqiyah Operation and Maintenance Company in 2015 becoming the first Saudi electrical engineer at the company.

Achieving the Kingdom’s targets through the Renewable Energy Project Development Office Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) is a long term, multifaceted renewable energy strategy designed to balance the domestic power mix in order to deliver long term economic stability and prosperity to the Kingdom, whilst working towards carbon avoidance commitments in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. Guided by principles of competitiveness, adding value to the Kingdom, fairness, transparency, timeliness and minimizing risk, the Renewable Energy Project Development Office (REPDO) of the Ministry of Energy works to provide a competitive tendering process to the private sector, building a secure and sustainable energy industry for the Kingdom through a systematic project management approach. To date, REPDO has released 12 projects in three rounds following a methodology that provides the market with an assured level of confidence and transparency in the selection process. From pre-development to tendering, REPDO strategically works to minimize risk to developers, guarantee local content requirements are met to create jobs and transfer skills, and ensure projects have a long-lasting impact on the domestic energy market.
