Simple chemicals called glycol ethers help make better perovskite thin films for solar cells.
Thin films for use in solar cells are more effective when simple chemicals called glycol ethers are added to the film-forming mix, a KAUST team has found. “This is an unexpected discovery,” says Esma Ugur, a Ph.D. student in the KAUST Solar Center team that observed the effect. “It yields more uniform thin films with improved structure and efficiency.”

A mild post-fabrication doping approach can boost the solar conversion of quantum dot-based photovoltaic cells. The performance of solar cells that consist of semiconductor nanoparticles surrounded by ligand molecules is now easier to control. Researchers from KAUST have developed a method that enhances the ability of these colloidal quantum dot (CQD) solar cells to convert the sun’s energy into electricity by altering the surface chemistry of their functional layers in a noninvasive way.
